Ciao!

Today, we will learn to talk about physical states and feelings in Italian.

✅ Esercizio 1

🌀 Ripassiamo. Let’s revise.

Do you remember the verbs essere (Di dove sei?) and avere (Quanti anni hai?)?

Try to conjugate these verbs out loud. Check here:

ESSERE

  • io sono

  • tu sei

  • lui/lei/Lei è

  • noi siamo

  • voi siete

  • loro sono

AVERE

  • io ho

  • tu hai

  • lui/lei/Lei ha

  • noi abbiamo

  • voi avete

  • loro hanno

Here’s a quick quiz to check if you really remember. Write the answer with the person: io ho.

⚠️ If you don’t remember, don’t worry! It’s normal. Go through the lessons again here: essere and avere

✅ Esercizio 2

Do you know these expressions?

Try to guess the meanings of the expressions. Match them to the sentences.

Let’s have a look at all the expressions we are going to learn in this Unità.

  • essere stanco - to be tired

  • essere felice - to be happy

  • essere contento - to be glad

  • essere triste - to be sad

  • essere arrabbiato - to be angry

  • avere fame - to be hungry

  • avere sete - to be thirsty

  • avere caldo - to be hot

  • avere freddo - to be cold

  • avere sonno - to be sleepy

🌀 Quizlet

Let’s learn them using Quizlet.

https://quizlet.com/pl/1188026368/ho-fame-flash-cards/?i=1wg40h&x=1qqt

🔎 Osserviamo

Read the sentences. Do you see any changes or anything interesting from a grammatical point of view?

Sara ha fame.

Claudio ha sete.

Maria ha caldo.

Carlo ha freddo.

Marta è stanca.

Giuseppe è stanco.

Carla è triste.

Anche Paolo e Tina sono tristi.

💡Remember:

In the expressions we are learning, in English, there is only one verb: to be.

In Italian, some of them need to be essere, and some of them need to have avere.

We need to learn this by heart. Use the Quizlet set above to do it in a fun and effective way.

Just like the nationalities, the expressions that need essere change form according to the person and number.

  • Maria è italiana. Marco è italiano.

  • Maria è stanca. Marco è stanco. Maria e Marco sono stanchi.

  • Claude è francese. Anna è francese. Claude e Anna sono francesi.

  • Claude è triste. Anna è triste. Claude e Anna sono tristi.
